Starting a new career can feel like moving to a different world. The language, the culture and the lifestyle often require a long period of acclimatization while climbing a steep learning curve. Today, greater numbers are finding themselves on that climb as the face of the workforce continues to change.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that millennials will overtake the majority representation of the workforce this year. Concurrently, the number of career changers entering the professional environment for the first time is also increasing. This influx of new talent needs preparation for the realities and expectations of the corporate world while being equipped with the tools to succeed and advance. Towards this end, Rice’s Glasscock School of Continuing Studies designed a Certificate in Professional Excellence program that will launch this February.

“As more organizations are investing in new talent, there is a desire to see a return on that investment more quickly,” said Kim McGaw, director of professional development at the Glasscock School. “We developed this program to meet this need, and to fast track new hires toward personal career success.”

This highly-interactive program is ideal for early-career professionals, who will gain a heightened awareness of themselves, their impact on others and their ability to influence change. Through personal inventory tests, the creation of a talent development action plan, follow-up coaching from instructors, processes to address professional challenges among other tools and best practices, participants will develop the skills and insights necessary to attain next steps in their careers. Individuals successfully completing all three courses will receive a Rice Certificate of Achievement.
