This week, three Glasscock School of Continuing Studies programs ran concurrently with one another, making for a great start to summer.

College Readiness InitiativeThe Center for College Readiness (CCR) Summer Bridge program, which started last week, ended yesterday after hosting 123 students from seven districts in the greater Houston area. Students spent their time supplementing algebra and communication skills in preparation for the jump between middle and high school.

Yesterday, CCR’s College Readiness Institute drew to a close after four days of teacher professional development. The program, part of the College Readiness Initiative, hosted 100 teachers from both middle and high school, representing 13 area districts. The training provided integrated AVID pedagogical methods with AP/Pre-AP course content, giving teachers the best of both worlds.

In addition to CCR programming, School Literacy and Culture continued with their Creative Writing Camps, which started at multiple locations last week. Our new Anderson-Clark Center is playing host to middle and high school participants through next Friday. Students have been enjoying the state-of-the-art classrooms and auditorium as well as the great lawn while they participate in genre-based instruction from talented, professional authors paired with experienced classroom teachers for a high-quality summer program.

Summer Bridge“This is always such an exciting time around the Glasscock School as we get to see Rice’s Vision for the Second Century fulfilled through our work,” said Jennifer Gigliotti, Ed.D., executive director of the Center for College Readiness and associate dean of the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies at Rice University. “These programs reach both middle and high school as well as teachers and students, and are a great example of the opportunity we have to impact Houston area education at every level.”
