This online course is designed to help AP Calculus students prepare for their AP exams.
Taught by master AP Calculus teacher Melissa Burkhead, this review focuses on key perspectives that connect the topics of limits, the derivative, and its application, the integral and its application, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus in order for students to be prepared to take the AP Calculus AB Exam. By the end of this course, students will be able to:
understand how calculus can be demonstrated graphically, analytically, numerically and verbally, as they appear on the AP Calculus AB Exam
apply the concepts of limits, differentiation, integration and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, as they are assessed on the AP Calculus AB Exam
communicate AP Calculus AB Exam topics and effectively explain solutions to problems in written sentences
review approximation rules and use graphing calculators effectively
The 2019 AP Calculus AB test date is Tuesday, May 14, 2019. Students will have an opportunity to interact with a master teacher to ask questions and clarify their understanding of the material in an optional online live, synchronous session held Monday, May 13, 2019.
Melissa Burkhead teaches Pre-AP Geometry, Pre-AP Pre-Calculus and BC Calculus at Trinity Valley School in Fort Worth, Texas. She has been teaching secondary students for 24 years, including in Mexico City, the El Paso public schools, Austin’s magnet school program and the Episcopal school system. Ms. Burkhead has presented at numerous AP conferences and most recently represented The College Board with a special AP Calculus focus inboth Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. and Bogotá, Colombia. She is also a reader for the AP Calculus exam. She has contributed to the proceedings of the International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics with articles titled “Linkages, Ellipses, and Elliptical Exercise Machines: Student Explorations,” and “Transforming Teacher Technology Use: Results from Summer Institute Training.” She holds a BA in mathematics and political science from Georgetown College and an MA in education (mathematics specialty) from The University of Texas at El Paso.

This course offers an optional online live, synchronous question and answer session. This session will occur Monday, May 13, 2019 at 7-8:30 p.m. Central time.
This course utilizes the Canvas platform and includes the use of high-quality videos and a synchronous session in Blackboard Collaborate. This course is designed as a supplemental review for students preparing for their AP exams. It is not intended to be taken in lieu of an AP course.
