APSI: AP Calculus AB for New Teachers, Week 2

This workshop provides participants with the tools they need to implement effective AP Calculus AB courses.

During this training, participants will explore the mathematical practices for AP Calculus (MPAC’S) and the components of the curriculum framework, including the big ideas, enduring understandings, learning objectives, and essential knowledge.  Participants will understand how to use activities that organize the course content to develop students’ proficiencies in the skills identified by the curriculum framework.  In addition, participants will work on a course plan that will help them decide how they will teach the skills and content of the AP Calculus AB course.  Special topics will focus on strategies and activities that will help ensure student success.

Instructor: Candace Smalley

Candace Smalley currently teaches mathematics at Trinity Valley School in Fort Worth, TX after teaching in Oklahoma for 22 years.  She began teaching AP Calculus AB in 1995 and was instrumental in the development of the AP Calculus BC program in the district.  Since coming to Trinity Valley School in 2011, she has continually taught the AP Calculus AB and Advanced Calculus/AP Calculus BC courses in addition to other mathematics offerings as needed. 

Candace has served as a College Board Consultant since 1998 and has been a reader or table leader for the AP Calculus exams since 2002.  She has served on the College Board’s Southwest Region Advisory Council and the Southwest Region Conference Planning Committee.  She has been a presenter at many AP Conferences including workshops in Hong Kong and Singapore, and has served as the lead instructor at numerous AP summer institutes.  Candace is a recipient of the College Board’s Advanced Placement Special Recognition Award and has also received recognition for her work with the AP program as a Siemens Award for Advanced Placement winner.

Day 1

Participants will discuss an overview of the AP Calculus AB course including the curriculum framework, the MPAC’s, the AP Course Audit, and the AP Exam.  Special focus for day one is big idea #1: limits, and how it serves as the foundation for the course. 

Day 2

Participants will develop a scope and sequence for the AP Calculus AB course including strategies to build the skills and enduring understandings required in the course.  Special focus for day two is big idea #2:  derivatives, and the applications of differential calculus.

Day 3

Participants will create units of instruction that incorporate the essential knowledge skills that lead to the enduring understandings.  Special focus for day three is big idea #3:  integrals and the fundamental theorem of calculus, including several applications of integral calculus.

Day 4

Participants will analyze and discuss the various AB applications that connect differential and integral calculus along with strategies to maximize student success.  Special focus for day four is the AP Calculus AB exam with an in-depth discussion of the 2018 AB Exam including comments about the AP Exam from the point of view of an AP Reader and an exploration of the scoring guidelines using student samples.
