APSI: AP Computer Science Principles for New Teachers, Week 1

This workshop provides teachers with the tools they need to implement an effective AP Computer Science Principles course.

During this training, teachers will explore the computational thinking practices and the components of the curriculum framework, including the big ideas, enduring understandings, learning objectives, and essential knowledge. Participants will understand how to use activities that organize the course content to develop students’ proficiencies in the skills identified by the curriculum framework. In addition, participants will work on a course plan that will help them decide how they will teach the skills and content of the AP Computer Science Principles course.

Jill Westerlund teaches AP Computer Science, IB Computer Science SL, Computer Science Principles AP Pilot and Dual Enrollment Computer and Information Systems at Hoover High School in Hoover, Alabama. Additionally, Jill teaches APCS-A for the Alabama Virtual School via the Alabama ACCESS program.  She serves students from high schools in the central region of the state by offering APCS-A virtually. Since 1990, Jill has taught at the secondary and post-secondary levels.

Jill serves as a mentor teacher for CS4Alabama’s launch of Computer Science Principles course and is a participating pilot teacher in the CollegeBoard National Pilot of AP Computer Science Principles Phase II.

Jill believes that computer technology has the ability to make life more productive, more communicative and more interesting and loves teaching and learning with others. It has been her privilege to share a professional journey with so many wonderful students, parents, peers and administrators.

She and her husband have two sons who keep life very busy. The Westerlunds love to take cruises, travel to new places and attend sporting events. In Jill’s extra time she enjoys cooking, scrapbooking, sewing, knitting and enjoying the many blessings God has given her.
