APSI: AP English Literature and Composition for Experienced Teachers, Week 3

This summer institute will combine the examination of methodology and content with sharing ideas, discuss effective critical thinking and writing strategies, and review samples from the 2017 AP exam.

This Institute uses College Board-developed materials as well as other resources to expand the participants' knowledge base and to provide a framework for teachers in developing and/or enhancing their AP curricula.ch and more about how to teach students to read, analyze, and write effectively, confidently,  and independently. Participants can expect interactive sessions where they can learn and practice the basics essential for maintaining a successful AP English Literature course with their students. Participants will examine strategies to help students better understand aesthetic, cultural, and historical approaches and reasons to analyze and explain literary texts. Participants will explore and share practical teaching strategies, including approaches that support the equity agenda of the College Board.

Instructor: Celine Gomez

Celine Gomez teaches in Plano, Texas which is a northern suburb of Dallas, TX. At Plano West, she has taught various levels of 11th and 12th grade English since 2007 from on- level to honors to AP. She is team leader for AP English Literature. Her teaching career began at Plano East where she taught from 1999-2007 where she taught various levels of 11th and 12th grade English from on-level to AP to IB. Since 2007 she has been an endorsed AP College Board Consultant; she serves as an AP Advocate for Texas; she is on the AP Annual Conference steering committee 2016-2018. For the past fourteen years, she has been an AP Literature national essay grader for College Board; for the past seven summers, she has served as a table leader at the AP reading; last year she served and will serve this upcoming summer on the sample selection committee that sets the training essays for Question 3 at the AP reading. Additionally, since 2012 she has worked with NMSI (National Math and Science Institute) – conducting APSIs, Saturday study sessions, and other teacher trainings. Some other AP Literature consultant work has been done for Propel Strategies (creating lessons, grading mock exams) and Massachusetts Insight Education (teacher trainings, student study sessions). Ms. Gomez attended Texas State University where she received her M.A. in English with a minor in Secondary Education; she received her B.A. in English and Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana.
