The objective of this course is intended to provide both new and experienced Advanced Placement Studio Art teachers with an understanding of the requirements of the Drawing, 2-D Design, and 3-D Design portfolios.
Participants will understand the standard setting and grading rubric for each of the three portfolios. Sessions will include slide examples of AP students work covering the concentration, breadth and quality sections of each of the three portfolios. A detailed explanation of the AP Studio Art reading will be provided. Teachers will be given strategies for how to structure their AP class and help their students with concentration and breadth ideas.
Alison Youkilis is an adjunct professor at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Before moving on to the university level, Alison taught at Wyoming High School where the art program received the Rockefeller Brothers Award for Excellence as well as the Presidential Commission of the Arts National Recognition Award for Humanities. Her AP Studio Art students had a 100% passage rate. For the past thirteen years, Alison has been a reader for the AP Studio Art exam where she has served both as a reader and a table leader. Her consulting work for both the College Board and International Baccalaureate has taken her throughout the United States and internationally to China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Dubai.

Importance of equity and access
Teachers will be asked to create a mini concentration based on subject and media of their choice. Critiques will be held for these projects. For participants pursuing graduate credit, these art works will be graded. For non-credit participants, the artwork is required but not graded. Teachers taking this class for credit will also be asked to create two units suitable for the Breadth section of the AP exam. These will need to be submitted for a final grade.
With an emphasis on the Concentration section of the AP Studio Art exam, teachers are asked to think about and pick their theme before coming to the workshop. Play to your strengths but be willing to reach out of your comfort zone by taking risks and experimenting. Just like we encourage our students to do, think about how to show growth and discovery with your own mini concentration. Teachers will be asked to complete for pieces 11”x 14” for flat work. Minimal supplies and mats for you. Teachers working in 3D will need to bring supplies.
