Essentials of Human Resources

Recommended for those new to human resources, small business owners and entrepreneurs, equip yourself with critical knowledge to improve your ability to handle challenging human resources issues. Due to the high demand for this course, multiple sections are offered.

The newly updated, SHRM Essentials of Human Resources provides foundational HR Knowledge and incorporates components of the SHRM BoCK. It provides insights into the standards for knowledge, strategies and competencies required of effective HR professionals around the world.

Managing any organization requires knowledge of the rules and regulations of human resource management. In this course, gain a broad overview of human resources; learn the foundational knowledge about recruiting, hiring, performance management, compensation and legal impact; understand the behavioral competencies that improve judgment and decision making; and learn practical experience through tools and resources to improve your job performance; and learn the tools to help reduce potential costly lawsuits. Once you successfully complete the course, earn a Rice Certificate of Achievement. No prior HR experience required.

Kathleen M. Fenninger, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, GPHR, - SHRM-CP and Essentials of HR Instructor - has more than 25 years of experience in human resources both as a generalist and an employment specialist, primarily in the energy and financial services industries in Houston and New York City. She has served as president of the Houston Human Resource Management Association and was awarded the Distinguished Professional in Human Resources award in 1998. Ms. Fenninger holds an MBA in organizational behavior and marketing, an M.S. in education and a B.A. in English from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. She has been an instructor for the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies since 1996.

Instructor: Paula H. Harvey

Paula H. Harvey, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, GPHR -SHRM-CP/SCP Instructor, is the VP of Human Resources for Schulte Business Systems in Hockley, TX. She has worked in the retail, services, construction and manufacturing industries. Mrs. Harvey has 29 years’ experience as a Human Resources generalist. She earned her bachelor's of business administration in International Marketing and Operations Management from the University of Texas at Austin. She has also earned her MBA with a concentration in human resources management from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  Using her HR certifications and MBA she teaches several business related topics especially in Human Resources. She is an internationally recognized speaker on global and strategic business issues, and co-authored two books with other HR professionals.  She is an active member of the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) having served as the SE Membership Advisory Council Representative (MAC), NCSHRM State Director/President and President of Union County HR Association and Charlotte Area SHRM. Currently she is a member of HR Houston and serves on the University Liaison committee. She was awarded the NCSHRM “HR Professional of the Year” and the York County SHRM HR onsultant of the Year awards.
