Fall AP: AP Biology

Developed for teachers interested in acquiring content and strategies for teaching advanced courses, these seminars will be facilitated by a master teacher and will provide a forum for the exploration and discussion of course content, best practices and instructional strategies.

This one day course will be a good follow up to a Summer Institute, a great refresher course, or if you are brand new this will be a help for you as well. The focus of this course will be on content, some instructional strategies and some best practices that could help in the AP Biology classroom.

Topics will include the following:

+ Strategies for working with Free Response Questions
+ Strategies for working on Labs using Claim, Evidence and Reasoning
+ Best practices in the classroom and how reading comprehension is so vital to learning in science classrooms

Instructor: Anne Gill

Anne Gill is a teacher in the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District. She has taught Chemistry Honors, Aquatics, Anatomy and Physiology throughout her 15 years as an educator – 10 of which have been dedicated to teaching AP Biology and learning as much as possible about the course. The AP Biology program at her school has grown since she started teaching and averages 120 students each year. Ms. Gill spent many summers taking classes about AP Biology, and now, she spends them teaching course material to other teachers and students. She is currently an AP Biology consultant for the National Mathematics and Science Initiative, and for the past four years, she has been an AP reader and will continue utilizing her skills as a reader in 2016. Ms. Gill has received multiple awards including the 2006 Local Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year, the 2013 Outstanding Biology Teacher for the state of Texas and was inducted into the Cypress Fairbanks Wall of Fame that same year. Ms. Gill is currently the secretary and treasurer for the Texas Association of Biology Teachers. She is a graduate of Texas A&M University, where she received her bachelor’s in Wildlife and Fisheries Science, and is currently working on her master’s in biology through the University of Illinois.
