Developed for teachers interested in acquiring content and strategies for teaching advanced courses, these seminars will be facilitated by a master teacher and will provide a forum for the exploration and discussion of course content, best practices and instructional strategies.
Participants will work with all aspects of the AP Language Exam – multiple choice and free response questions. The seminar will focus specifically on strategies to build students’ foundational strengths in both reading rigorous nonfiction texts and responding critically to those texts through either analysis or argument. Multiple classroom materials and strategies will be shared throughout the day.
Topics will include the following:
+ Reading rhetorically
+ Foundational skills to enable students to respond to synthesis and argument questions
+ Key elements for rhethorical analysis
Patricia Cain has served as the Lead AP English teacher for Pasadena ISD in Texas for the past 13 years, where she assists both AP English Literature and AP English Language teachers at six separate high schools. In addition, she has 36 years of teaching experience, including 22 years in AP English Language and Composition. Mrs. Cain is a College Board consultant, a veteran reader for the AP Language Exam, a presenter at the AP National Conference, a writer for the College Board’s publication College Ed, and an AP Language presenter for the National Math and Science Initiative.
