Developed for teachers interested in acquiring content and strategies for teaching advanced courses, these seminars will be facilitated by a master teacher and will provide a forum for the exploration and discussion of course content, best practices and instructional strategies.
During this one-day session, participants will engage in the following:
+ examine two written essays to determine why one received an “acceptable” score and why one did not
+ complete a color-coded analysis of an essay
+ assess the effect of sentence variety and syntax
+ analyze an essay or nonfiction essay
+ create multiple choice questions for a specific piece of literature
Topics will include the following:
+ scoring student essays
+ analyzing a student-written essay
+ creating a passage using a variety of sentence beginnings
+ reading and dissecting an essay for deeper analysis
+ formulating and composing multiple-choice questions
With degrees (B.A. and M.S.) from Purdue University and additional course work at UT-Austin, Pat Conquest has taught a wide variety of levels and courses in her 35 years in the classroom, the last 13 of which included the sophomore Pre-AP area. Although retired from Westwood High School in the Round Rock Independent School District, Pat remains active as an observer for UTeach student teachers and interns and as a College Board consultant in the areas of Pre-AP® Strategies: AP Vertical Teams® in English and SAT, presenting at one-and two-day conferences as well as summer institutes. A self-described ‘workshop addict,’ she firmly believes that learning and sharing should never stop. She considers herself a lifelong learner, a student along with her students and participants.
