Fall Early Literacy Summit

In the wake of the first anniversary of Hurricane Harvey, this full-day conference will provide Houston area early childhood educators with information about healthy ways to manage stress and trauma themselves so that they might better address the needs of the young children in their care, as well as gain insight into ways to meaningfully support children in the aftermath of trauma.

Join Rice University’s School Literacy and Culture program for our third annual Early Literacy Summit, “Promoting the Socio-Emotional Development of Young Children:  Creating Safe Spaces for Children’s Voices to be Heard”.  During this one-day gathering on the Rice campus, early childhood educators will have the opportunity to select and attend four breakout sessions.  These interactive workshops will empower teachers to create safe spaces in their classrooms that encourage children to share information that is meaningful to them. This year’s sessions will include ideas for supporting children’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive development through art, block, sensory, STEM, math, and dramatic play centers.  Speakers from the international non-profit organization Save the Children will work with early childhood teachers and administrators as they analyze adult responses to trauma so that teachers might better meet the needs of the children in their care.  Participants will receive resources and simple classroom materials that promote children’s healing and socio-emotional development through story and play.
