Fall IB: Language A: Language and literature, Category 1

Category 1 workshops are designed to provide training and assistance for schools that have decided to apply for IB authorization. They are equally relevant for educators who are new to a school with an existing IB programme and those interested in joining an IB World School.

This workshop will provide professional development and assistance to subject specific educators from either a school that has decided to apply for IB authorization or those which are new or recently appointed to a school with an existing IB Diploma programme. This workshop is recommended for teachers of Language A: Language and literature from schools which have taken the decision to apply
to offer the Diploma Programme, as well as new or recently appointed Language A: Language and literature teachers from IB World Schools

Participants will:

+ Develop a deep understanding of the IB organization: its history, mission statement, learner profile, IB continuum, the international dimension and university recognition
+ Use elements of the IB programme standards and practices (A, B, C) as a guide for decisions regarding implementation of the programme
+ Consider the impact of the centrality of the IB learner profile and approaches to teaching and learning in the DP model
+ Explore the links between English A: Language and literature with theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS) and the extended essay (EE)
+ Develop an understanding of student and teacher questions to guide inquiry
+ Design course outlines that align with curriculum requirements, aims and objectives of the subject, IB terminology and Standards C1-C4
+ Consider an overview of authorization process 
+ Understand the assessment requirements for English A: Language and literature
+ Discuss the design principles of summative assessment task(s) in relation to the subject group requirements and objectives
+ Create formative assessment tasks that will equip students with the required factual, procedural, and conceptual knowledge that support the summative assessment task(s)
+ Use assessment criteria to make judgments about student achievement
+ Discuss and select suitable texts and resources that support teaching and learning in an IB classroom
+ Explore the nature of the extended essay and the role of the supervisor
+ Explore the role of reflection in the extended essay
+ Understand the importance of academic honesty
+ Interact with and explore the subject-specific teaching and learning resources (TSMs) on the online curriculum centre (OCC)
+ Understand how to engage in the curriculum review cycle at relevant stages
+ Understand how to participate in professional learning communities in school to facilitate the transfer of professional development

Instructor: Mel Coryell

Mel Coryell teaches English A: Language and Literature and Theory of Knowledge and serves as DP Coordinator at Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. Previously, she served in the same roles for over a decade at Lawrence North High School, worked in university faculty development, and was a founding board member of the Indiana Association of IB World Schools. Mel is a 2015 Milken Educator Award Recipient, a two-time Bezos Educator Scholar, and a Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Grant recipient. Mel is passionate about expanding access to rigorous educational programs and is committed to equity in education.

She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Butler University, a Transition to Teaching Graduate Certificate from Indiana Wesleyan University, and a BA in History and English from Ball State University.
