Category 3 workshops are designed to provide a forum for experienced IB educators to build on and enhance their professional development portfolios. Participants will engage in in-depth investigation into specific areas of interest and expertise.
Leadership is in part a social construct, positioned in time and place and influenced by personality. This workshop aims to identify, test and critique the assumptions upon which your own style, definition and understanding of leadership are based.
Leadership theory and current research will form the basis for discussion with case studies and your own experiences being used to explore leadership, cross-cultural investigations and the impact of culture on leadership styles and practices. There will be an emphasis on the complex, contextual and holistic nature of leadership, and you will build deeper understandings of how to adapt your leadership style in different contexts.
The workshop will include an introduction to the capabilities and intelligences, core themes and leadership processes that are considered to be most supportive of effective leadership in a range of IB contexts.
In line with IB philosophy you will be encouraged to develop an investigative mindset, become more inquiry based and reflective and model lifelong learning. Action research will be introduced, helping you identify major issues that leaders may face, while planning possible responses that reflect an awareness of local context.
You will develop and articulate a deeper understanding of your own philosophy and draft a personal philosophy statement, which you can then evaluate as to its relevance and effectiveness in daily practice, using a reflective journal or blog.
Dr. James McSwain currently serves as Principal of Mirabeau B. Lamar High School in Houston, Texas and has served as a Lead Principal in the Houston Independent School District. Lamar High School is an International Baccalaureate World School with an enrollment of over thirty three hundred students. He has worked for 29 years as a high school principal and over 34 years in education. His experiences in the field include rural, suburban, and urban settings with a wide range of youth, including severely at-risk and impoverished students.
Dr. McSwain is a Past President of the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals – one of the nation’s largest principal’s organizations. He has been honored as the Principal of the Year on separate occasions for TASSP Region Eight and Texas Region Four Education Service Center. Additionally, he was named a Texas State Principal of the Year and became the Texas nominee for National Principal of the Year. Dr. McSwain holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from the University of Texas at Arlington, a Master of Arts Degree in Education Administration from Tarleton State University, and a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from Texas Tech University. His doctoral research focused on at-risk minority youth in an alternative setting. He has been recognized by Tarleton State University as an Outstanding Alumni. He has worked as a Principal Mentor for the Texas Education Agency. He currently serves as an International Baccalaureate Site Visit Team Leader and Workshop Leader. He has worked as an Adjunct Professor at Texas A & M University -Texarkana, University of Houston, Tarleton State University, and presently teaches at the University of St. Thomas
