We often live on autopilot, out of touch with our bodies and emotions, missing most of the moments of our lives. When we can get in touch with qualities of mindfulness, there is a sense of being more connected, real and alive. Mindfulness is a natural, intuitive state of presence that involves engaging with the world with openness, curiosity and non-judgmental awareness. Jon Kabat-Zinn, a pioneer in the field, describes mindfulness as the “simple but not easy…” “art of conscious living.” Elizabeth Slator and Christine Galib introduce you to the philosophy and practice of mindful living, sharing approaches that can help you utilize your innate resources, respond more effectively to stress and nurture compassion for yourself and others. The course includes in-class activities, discussion, suggested at-home exercises and a half-day silent retreat. No previous experience is required, and the course is appropriate for all fitness levels.

Instructor: Christine Galib

Christine Galib, M.Ed., is the Director of Entrepreneurship and Wellness Programs at the Village School in Houston, where she supports students, teachers and staff in physical, mental and social practices that promote health and wellness. She is a Teach For America alumna and holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania, where she currently serves as an instructor. Ms. Galib is also a nationally certified integrative nutrition health coach and yoga teacher who has offered workshops and written articles related to mindfulness, emotional intelligence and nutrition.

Elizabeth Slator, Ph.D., M.Ed., is associate director of Rice University’s Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center, where she creates wellness programs, teaches classes on performance psychology and leadership development and serves as the sport psychology consultant for the Rice Athletic Department. She is also a part-time faculty member of the Psychology Department at the University of St. Thomas. Dr. Slator holds a master’s degree from Auburn University in Health and Human Performance and a doctorate in kinesiology, recreation and sport studies from the University of Tennessee. She is a certified personal trainer, health and wellness coach and qualified mindfulness-based stress reduction teacher.
