The college application process includes many critical steps. Letters of recommendation can sometimes be an overlooked element in a student's college application. This course offers educators knowledge on how to best advise students, so that they can secure the most effective letters of recommendation. It also provides tips and strategies to assist educators in writing effective letters of recommendation for their students.
Advising Students on How to Secure the Most Effective Letters of Recommendation: This module addresses letters of recommendation from the perspective of student advising. As educators, how can we best advise students on how to secure the most effective letters of recommendation? Participants will learn about important information to convey to students such as the value of the letter of recommendation, how to request letters of recommendation, and tips for students to secure the strongest letters possible.
Writing Effective Letters of Recommendation: This module addresses letters of recommendation from the perspective of the educator. Participants will understand the value of the letter of recommendation to college admissions officers and develop strategies for writing effective letters for students.
Dr. Jennifer Gigliotti is responsible for the design of innovative professional development models for teachers, including Advanced Placement workshops, online professional development, college and career counseling workshops, and customized district trainings. She is the co-author on a college readiness grant collaboration with the AVID organization and 13 Houston-area school districts, sponsored by the Houston Endowment. Jennifer has extensive experience writing curriculum and previously taught secondary social studies in Fort Bend Independent School District. She holds an Ed.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Houston as well as an M.Ed. in secondary social studies education and a B.A. from The Ohio State University.
Dr. Nick J. Accrocco was a college admissions professional at two highly selective universities and a college counselor at four distinct secondary school communities. He earned his B.A. from Vanderbilt University, his M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration from Vanderbilt University's George Peabody College of Education & Human Development, his graduate certificate in College Counseling from the University of California-Los Angeles and his Ed.D. in Professional Leadership from the University of Houston. Dr. Accrocco combines a passion for helping students and families through the college search process with a healthy amount of humor.
The Letters of Recommendation online course is intended to educate participants about the basics of the college admissions/advising process. This course will not increase the likelihood of admission to Rice University and is in no way affiliated with the Office of Admissions.
