This workshop will focus on teaching at a higher level and discussing ways to increase student engagement in the classroom.
The workshop will be split in two-day sessions: one session with Sheila Guillory, and one session with Laurie Fowlkes. Instructors will focus on inquiry-based activities that address the middle school 6th and 7th supporting standards, 8th grade STAAR readiness, and supporting TEKS. Topics and activities are suitable for all middle school science teachers and are designed to enrich student learning and participation in the classroom.
Laurie Fowlkes has been working in education for over 20 years. For the past 12 years, she served as a secondary science curriculum specialist in Cypress Fairbanks ISD. This position had many different responsibilities, including providing district-wide staff development to over 300 teachers, writing curriculum, and mentoring new or struggling teachers. She has created staff development workshops with a blended online and classroom environment. Ms. Fowlkes is also employed by Connections Education as an adjunct teacher where she has taught education technology, health and algebra online. Her other work experience includes preparing and presenting face to face staff developments to science teachers at various small school districts in the area focusing on pedagogy and science content. Beginning February 2018, Laurie began working at the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies at Rice University as an Informational Technology Specialist.
Sheila Guillory graduated from Texas A&M University with a B.S. in biology and a minor in education. Ms. Guillory is a passionate science teacher with 24 years of teaching experience in grades 5th-8th Science. She is currently a teacher, an instructional coach, and a science department leader for 8th grade science in Jasper ISD. Ms. Guillory enjoys using innovative strategies to promoting active learning through hands-on activities. Additionally, she is passionate about science and is committed to maintaining up-to-date knowledge in the field and on the latest curriculum, and resources available for academic success of her students.
