Shaping Your Story

Author and editor Alexis Glynn Latner offers guidance on shaping compelling fiction or nonfiction, with discussion, in-class exercises and optional out-of-class exercises.

Many practicing and aspiring writers have a story that has been hard to write, impossible to finish or just doesn’t seem to work. In this engaging workshop, author and editor Alexis Glynn Latner shares the rules for shaping a compelling story, whether you want to write fiction or creative nonfiction. With class discussion, brief in-class exercises and optional out-of-class assignments, this course will guide you through shaping storyline, characters, viewpoint, chapters and scenes; crafting prose; revising your work; and finding your path as a writer. You are also welcome if you just want to learn what makes a good story tick.

Instructor: Alexis Glynn Latner

Alexis Glynn Latner, M.A., writes speculative fiction, mysteries and nonfiction. She has published numerous stories in addition to a series of four science fiction novels. Her articles on aviation, creative writing, science and technology and educational topics have appeared in regional, national and online magazines. Ms. Latner holds a bachelor’s degree in linguistics from Rice University and a master’s degree in systematic theology from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California.
