Spring IB: Counseling, Category 2

Category 2 workshops are designed to provide a forum for experienced IB educators with a focus on ways to improve programme delivery, assessment, teaching and learning.

In this overview of the IB Diploma Programme and the counsellor’s role, counsellors will obtain information needed to help them become effective IB counsellors. 

The workshop will focus on the following:
+ key features of the Diploma Programme(DP) that lead to successful implementation of the DP
+ assessment of the relevant links between the IB Programme standards and practices (January 2014) to enhance teaching and learning
+ exploring strategies to support counsellors and career advisors to become more effective in their roles
+ strategies for improving access to the DP, enhancing the DP experience and working with challenges, supporting momentum
+ analysis of student outcome to maximize the Diploma experience
+ university recognition
+ understanding and analyzing IB assessment to better advise student in course selection
+ exposure to IB resources available on the online curriculum centre
+ learning about forthcoming changes and updates that affect the implementation of the DP
+ global learning communities and other platforms which aid in post-secondary planning

Instructor: Mary MacDonald

Mary MacDonald resides in Eastern Canada and is a retired Diploma Programme (DP) coordinator and high school counsellor with 30+ years of experience in the field of education.  She currently holds many roles as an IB Educator including workshop leader, five year evaluation and verification team lead and team member, as well as reader.

During her school career, she was involved in managing and overseeing student services, district trauma co-lead, counsellor and mentor, school leadership team member, university relations committee member, and university association of registrars and admissions conference speaker. She was also a member of the Atlantic Canada IB association and currently acts as President of that association.

She holds a Business Diploma, an immersion certificate (French), a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics, (textile and design major) and a Masters of Education in Counselling.
