The Glasscock School's Essentials of Human Resources is fundamental for professionals starting their career in the HR field. No prior HR experience required.

Managing any organization requires knowledge of the rules and regulations of human resource management. Ideal for anyone with management responsibilities as well as for those new to the HR field, this introductory course covers the basics of hiring, paying, training and evaluating employees. Participants gain a broad overview of human resource management. Due to the high demand for this course, two sections are offered each session.

Learning Modules

The SHRM Essentials provides knowledge and skills you can use immediately. It addresses six key human resource management practices, which are compiled into one comprehensive course book for easy reference.

Module One: Human Resource Management

  • Identify on-the-job and off-the-job training strategies

  • Explain the four levels of evaluation

Module Six: Performance Management

  • Describe the performance evaluation process and systems

Kathleen M. Fenninger, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, GPHR, - SHRM-CP and Essentials of HR Instructor - has more than 25 years of experience in human resources both as a generalist and an employment specialist, primarily in the energy and financial services industries in Houston and New York City. She has served as president of the Houston Human Resource Management Association and was awarded the Distinguished Professional in Human Resources award in 1998. Ms. Fenninger holds an MBA in organizational behavior and marketing, an M.S. in education and a B.A. in English from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. She has been an instructor for the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies since 1996.
