Summer AP Academies

The Academies, a 26-hour course, provides experienced AP teachers the opportunity to delve deeply into specific course content with higher education faculty and to connect to their discipline’s current work.

The Rice University Academies provide experienced AP® teachers the opportunity to delve deeply into specific course content with higher education faculty and to connect to their discipline’s current work. This unique professional development model provides teachers the depth of content needed to improve their instruction and increase student achievement.

Integration into AP Teaching: Each Academy master teacher, working with university faculty members, will facilitate classroom conversations to help teachers incorporate the advanced content into their AP® classroom.

Discussions, Readings, Collegiality: Participants who choose an Academy should be prepared to participate in engaging, relevant and immersive discussions with the lead consultant, university faculty members and fellow participants. Participants may also be given required readings before and during the course.

All courses are held on the Rice campus. Courses and master teachers are subject to change. Only enrolled adults are allowed to participate in the program. We cannot accommodate supervised or unsupervised children.

Acknowledgment of enrollment: Once you register for a course through our online registration system, you will be enrolled in the course. An enrollment acknowledgement will immediately be sent to the email address on your account showing payment confirmation or including instructions for submitting payment via check. In some cases, a course may be full, and you will have the option of getting on a waiting list. A waiting list is automatically created for a course once it has filled to capacity. If a spot should become available in that filled course, and you are next on the waiting list, you will receive an email to the email address on file with instructions for completing registration for that specific course. Note: The Rice University Academies for AP Teachers is not approved by TAGT for GT hours, but some districts will allow a limited number of hours to be applied for update hours. Please contact your district for specifics.

Lunch will be served on campus daily and is included in the cost of tuition.

Transportation to/from Rice will be provided from the Marriott.

Please do not book a hotel until you are registered in your desired course.

The Houston Marriott Medical Center is located a few blocks from the campus. Rates do not include parking or taxes. Room amenities include a small refrigerator, hair dryer, clock radio, iron and ironing board.

Check-in is on the Monday before the start of the program and check-out is on Friday. The Marriott will host a reception on Thursday evening for guests in this program. Please check with the hotel desk upon check-in.
