Much like our very own universe, the rate of scientific progress seems to be accelerating at an ever increasing pace. Each new discovery or innovation opens the door to a hundred more. This spring we are excited to present “Reshaping Our World: Recent Scientific Breakthroughs.” In this course, five Rice faculty members will examine some of the latest scientific breakthroughs in several fields, such as the Higgs boson particle, the latest developments in carbon materials, space flight, tablet computers and paintable batteries, and how these new developments are changing our day-to-day lives.

Co-sponsored by the Rice Space Institute, Rice University Department of Chemistry, Rice University Department of Physics and Astronomy, Rice University Department of Mechanical Engineering and Material Science, and the Ken Kennedy Institute for Information Technology, this course promises to open participants’ minds to the fact that the future is today.

Classes will run five Mondays from February 11-March 18, 7:00-8:30 p.m. (no class March 11).
