In this weeklong institute, early childhood teachers rethink their reading and writing practices in light of new research trends. Join a community of teachers committed to thinking deeply about best literacy practices and bring home hundreds of classroom ideas. Participants in our Classroom Storytelling Project are encouraged to enroll in this Summer Institute, which reinforces and deepens the learning of the school-year sessions. Topics include: Translating cutting edge reading and writing research into classroom practice Making the most of children’s storytelling, dictation, and dramatization Developing effective strategies for teaching alphabet and print knowledge, phonological awareness and other essential literacy skills Considering the big picture of early education: teacher/child relationships, self-regulation, socio-moral development and more Bridging the gap between children’s’ homes and school cultures Two sessions offered: Week 1: Tuesday, July 18 - Friday, July 21 Week 2: Monday, July 24 - Thursday, July 27

This institute provides early childhood and elementary teachers opportunities to discover fresh, effective writing activities and techniques that span the genres. Two sections are offered: one for early childhood teachers (Pre-K-1st) and one for elementary teachers (2nd-4th). During the institute, expert School Literacy and Culture mentors and Creative Writing Camp teachers share narrative, expository and poetry prompts that transfer directly to the classroom and meet the needs of students in innovative ways. English, social studies and science are specifically addressed.
