AP International Summer Institute

Rice University hosts its annual AP International Summer Institute, administered by the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies at Rice University and endorsed by the College Board.

August 4-7, 2020

In 2020, Rice University hosts its 2nd Annual AP International Summer Institute in San Jose, Costa Rica at La Universidad Latinoamericana de Ciencia y Tecnologia (ULACIT). The institute is administered by the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies at Rice University and endorsed by the College Board.

Courses are led by experienced, enthusiastic and dedicated College Board-endorsed lead consultants who have a broad range of knowledge and proven ability presenting to their peers. Instructors for 2020 include AP test development committee members, AP exam readers, winners of special recognition awards from the College Board and winners of regional and national teaching awards.

When: Each course meets Tuesday through Friday of its given week, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Where: Courses are held on the at La Universidad Latinoamericana de Ciencia y Tecnologia (ULACIT) in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Acknowledgment of Enrollment: Once you register for a course through our online registration system, you will be enrolled in the course. An enrollment acknowledgement will immediately be sent to the email address on your account showing payment confirmation or including instructions for submitting payment via check. In some cases, a course may be full, and you will have the option of getting on a waiting list. A waiting list is automatically created for a course once it has filled to capacity. If a spot should become available in that filled course, and you are next on the waiting list, you will receive an email to the email address on file with instructions for completing registration for that specific course. Only enrolled adults are allowed to participate in the Institute. The institute cannot accommodate supervised or unsupervised children.

Effective immediately, all Advanced Placement International Summer Institute registrations have to go through the College Board’s registration system, Cvent. All participants must login to Cvent using their College Board login and password to begin their registration in Cvent. For all issues regarding your College Board account, please contact the College Board support center at 866-315-6068.

Once you have selected the course, you will then click the provided link on the Cvent confirmation page to launch you into Rice’s current registration system, escWorks, to complete your registration via credit card or purchase order. 

Please note this will require a second login, which is your email address and password that you selected (or you will need to create an escWorks account if you do not already have one). 

For returning participants, if you do not know your escWorks password, please click ‘forgot your password’ and a link will be sent to you. The email may be sent to your junk/spam folder, so please check there before clicking the link again. If you do not receive the link, please send an email to to request a password reset.

College Board Fellows

The College Board AP Fellows program is an annual competitive grant program that provides scholarships for secondary school teachers at U.S. schools (and schools located in U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) planning to teach AP courses in schools that serve minority and/or low-income students who have been traditionally underrepresented in AP courses. The scholarships assist teachers with the cost of attending an AP Summer Institute. Please go to the following link to view additional information and the registration form:

Late registration: $645* (after July 20)

Tuition includes College Board Exam Resources, course materials, parking and lunch.

When not participating in the workshops, participants are encouraged to enjoy San Jose and its many attractions to make the most of their experience. Attractions of interest may include:

Plaza de la cultura (marked as 2 on map below) 

This plaza located in the center of downtown is the social and cultural heart of San Jose. Filled with street performers, vendors and various celebrations, tourists flock to Plaza de la cultura to get a real sense of all that San Jose streetlife has to offer.

National Museum (marked as 3 on map below) 

Housed in the old Bellavista Fortress, this museum displays the history and culture of Costa Rica from pre-Columbian times to the present day. The museum's observation deck highlights the beauty of the city with stunning vistas of San Jose.

Pre-Columbian Gold Museum (marked as 4 on map below) 

Often praised as one of the best attractions in the city, this museum offers an extraordinary collection of gold artwork, ornaments and monuments from the pre-Columbian era. Visitors are invited to explore the rich cultural relationship between Latin American countries and this precious metal.

The National Theater (marked as 5 on map below) 

Opened to the public in 1897, the Teatro Nacional is one of San Jose's most admired structures. Visitors marvel at artwork and architecture on self-guided tours and experience free musical programs several times during the week.

National Craft Market (marked as 6 on map below) 

Those looking for handcrafted Costa Rican souvenirs should consider spending time browsing the goods for sale at this artisan's market. From jewelry and clothes to woodwork and ceramics, the National Craft Market offers a variety of keepsakes for foreigners and nationals alike.

Central Market (marked as 7 on map below) 

As the largest market in San Jose, the Mercado Central serves as a bustling hub of Costa Rican tastes and flavors. Visitors are invited to expand their palettes by sampling authentic Costa Rican cuisine and unique flavors.
