8 Easy Steps to Your Master of Liberal Studies Application

It's time to take your next step. Here are 8 easy steps to start your graduate school journey off on the right foot.

8 easy steps to your MLS degree

You’ve worked this hard to get to this place in your life and now it’s time for the next challenge. You’re ready. Now all you need to do is get started. Here are the first eight steps on your path to a Master of Liberal Studies degree at Rice:

  1. Review application requirements
To earn admission to the Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) program you have to meet certain criteria. Most importantly, you must have a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an accredited university or college, and have maintained a 3.0 minimum GPA during your undergraduate studies. See all the application requirements here.

  2. Prepare personal statement
Your personal statement is your declaration of exactly why you’re a prime candidate for the MLS program. This is your opportunity to give the admissions committee an insight into who you are and how an MLS degree would help you achieve your goals.

  3. Refresh resume
The experience you’ve gained in the real world is a valuable tool for demonstrating your mettle. Update and upgrade your resume to show how your career has led you to Rice.

  4. Start writing sample
Writing a compelling essay is by far one of the most important parts of your application to the MLS program. It’s a chance to display your critical thinking skills and show off your writing chops as you thoughtfully examine a contemporary issue of your choice. View our writing tips blog.

  5. Request official transcripts
Contact your alma mater and have electronic copies of your transcripts sent to the Graduate Liberal Studies office at mls@rice.edu. If your previous institution didn’t have this service, please have them mail an official copy instead:

  6. Request letters of recommendation
It’s not just who you know, it’s what they think of you. To apply for the MLS program, you need two letters of recommendation. Reach out to those who can speak to your unique contribution to their lives—whether that was in the classroom or at work.

  7. Complete graduate admission application
This is the home stretch—you’ve already done the hard work of assembling a great application package. Now you just need to complete the online application and attach all of the required items.

  8. Submit application fee
Finally, pay the $85 non-refundable application fee or attend an information session to have it waived. View upcoming information sessions below.
