Your passion can become your purpose with an advanced degree at Rice University. The Rice Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) program combines a world-class Rice education with the flexibility a degree plan tailored to each student’s unique needs. From contemporary moral issues and human rights to Dickens and Shakespeare, the MLS program offers a diverse array of intellectual challenges geared toward those looking to expand both their minds and their horizons.
Now, it’s more straightforward than ever to start on your path of liberal studies mastery. Starting in Fall 2019, the MLS program will be scheduled according to Rice’s standard academic calendar. This not only makes it easier to plan your course load but it also makes it possible for MLS students to be eligible for financial aid for the very first time in Rice history.
In addition to this major change, we have also adjusted admissions criteria to reduce writing samples required from three to one. Prospective students will write one essay based on a prompt selected from one of the following areas: humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences. This requirement challenges applicants to showcase their critical thinking, reasoning and writing skills, helping us understand your drive to be part of this unique program.
