APSI: AP Comparative Government & Politics for New Teachers, Week 3

The AP Comparative Government and Politics course is designed to introduce teachers to the elements essential for designing this course.

Instruction will include coverage of the major content areas and themes, including the conceptual framework of the course and specific country information. The workshop will provide sample interactive lessons and explanations of how to teach the countries in a comparative manner. Participants will also be introduced to a wide array of resources that will facilitate the teaching of the course including textbooks, websites, videos, outside readings and College Board materials. A variety of curricular and calendar approaches will be discussed. Participants will leave the workshop with the content and resources necessary to teach this course.

Betsy Heckman has taught since 1999 and currently is the History Department Chair at Westminster School, in Simsbury, CT. During her career, she has taught a number of AP courses in addition to AP Comparative Government and Politics, including AP European History, AP U.S. History and AP Psychology. Ms. Heckman is a member of the Test Development Committee for the AP Comparative and Government exam. She also participates in the scoring for the exam and is a Question Leader. Ms. Heckman earned her undergraduate degree from Middlebury College and a M.A. in International Relations from Yale University.
