What skills positively influence and support a student’s approach to life-long learning? All IB programmes develop the approaches to learning (ATL) skill categories of communication, social, self-management, research and thinking.
Workshop objectives include:
+ Develop a deeper understanding of ATL as a way for students to acquire and use skills developed over time in order to access learning.
+ Consider contemporary research to apply metacognitive strategies throughout the learning process, with an emphasis on assessment as learning.
+ Design the curriculum to encourage students to build these skills.
+ Reflect on how developing cognitive, affective and meta-cognitive skills using a variety of strategies may increase the capacity of learners to become self regulated and intrinsically motivated.
Kari Christensen was trained to an IB Educator in 2008 and has been serving as the MYP coordinator for fourteen years and as the DP coordinator for the past five years at Robbinsdale Cooper High School. Over the last six years, Kari has also taught at Bethel University in St. Paul in their adult studies/graduate program, which offers the IB Teaching and Learning Certificate. In addition to leading workshops, I am a site visitor for verification and evaluation visits both in the United States and in Canada - both in English and French.
