Additionally, we facilitate a network of support for our students and alumni so that we ensure our teacher leaders continue to grow and evolve as professionals.
Become a Texas certified teacher in just 12 months with Rice University’s Education Alternative Teacher Certification program. The program (non-credit, non-transcribable) at Rice’s Glasscock School of Continuing Studies prepares new graduates and career changers for the rigors of the classroom. Students will meet Texas Education Agency requirements and complete a paid teaching internship, supervised by Rice faculty.
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is a 30-hour, non-thesis graduate degree program. With programs designed for both new teachers and experienced teachers, we provide opportunities for students holding bachelor’s degrees who are interested in pursuing graduate study in education. Our dedicated faculty offers teachers an exceptional amount of personal contact, coaching, support and supervision through this rigorous academic program. Additionally, program support continues with an internship experience that hones strong analysis of student work, classroom management, and parent-teacher relationships, and an alumni network for collaboration and support.
Our Principal Certification Program brings together the values and requirements of the Texas Education Agency with the academic quality of Rice University. You will learn how to develop a strategic vision that prioritizes high quality instruction and student achievement; establish a school-wide culture committed to improving student learning through clear goals, targets and strategies; cultivate a reflective practice that focuses on solutions, treat challenges as opportunities and support staff through organizational changes.
The Teacher Certification Program for Undergraduate Students is a 30-hour program that fulfills all requirements for a Texas Standard Teaching Certificate. Coursework includes professional education courses and extensive field experiences. The program is designed for students who are interested in pursuing teacher certification at the secondary level.
Students earn their Bachelor’s degree while majoring in the subject(s) they plan to teach while also taking graduate-level professional education courses. The Rice University Bachelor’s degree is conferred upon completion of undergraduate studies and the MAT and Texas Teacher Certification is awarded one year later after completion of the teaching internship. Students must complete the requirements for their bachelor's degree (at least 120 hours) and the MAT degree (30 hours) independently of each other (i.e., no course can be used simultaneously to satisfy both an undergraduate and a graduate degree requirement.)
