The greater Houston area is home to more than 15,000 nonprofit organizations providing essential services across myriad areas of support and enabling our communities to thrive. When they are successful in their missions, we are all the beneficiaries. From large organizations like the United Way Greater Houston to smaller ones like Have Shears Will Travel, they all play a vital part in shaping Houston into the vibrant metropolis we proudly call home.
Rice’s Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership (CPNL), part of the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies, has served nonprofit organizations for more than 40 years, increasing their effectiveness and impact by providing education and nurturing leadership.
"Rice is committed to the quality of nonprofits and the quality of life in Houston and the region," said Joe Synan, CPNL instructor and leadership and team effectiveness consultant. "There are many nonprofits started in the underserved communities — started by people in the underserved communities — and Rice invites these leaders to learn best practices, adding to their competence and confidence to continue to do what they're doing. That's a tremendous service to the community."
Through certificate programs, short courses and conferences, CPNL equips participants with the knowledge and skills to lead their organizations and strengthen their communities. These learning opportunities provide education in key areas for nonprofit success, like executive leadership, finance, strategic planning, and gift administration, among others. Taught by seasoned practitioners in a cohort of peers, uniting theory and nonprofit sector experience, these programs provide an experience uniquely tailored to the needs of nonprofit leaders.
One such nonprofit leader is Barbara Goodsoon, the executive director and president of Have Shears Will Travel, who received a scholarship to attend CPNL’s Leadership Institute for Nonprofit Executives. Learn more about Barbara’s journey below.
