Essentials of Human Resources

The Glasscock School's Essentials of Human Resources is fundamental for professionals starting their career in the HR field. No prior HR experience required.

Managing any organization requires knowledge of the rules and regulations of human resource management. Ideal for anyone with management responsibilities as well as for those new to the HR field, this introductory course covers the basics of hiring, paying, training and evaluating employees. Participants gain a broad overview of human resource management. Due to the high demand for this course, two sections are offered each session.

Essentials of Human Resources is offered in classroom format. Two sections are offered each session. Choose the section that works best with your schedule.

Learning Modules

The SHRM Essentials provides knowledge and skills you can use immediately. It addresses six key human resource management practices, which are compiled into one comprehensive course book for easy reference.

Module One: Human Resource Management

  • Federal EEO legislation
  • The EEOC and affirmative action

Module Three: Recruitment and Selection
  • Evaluate recruiting methods and their effectiveness
  • Analyze and evaluate job candidates
  • Recognize biases in the interview process and how to eliminate them
  • Explain the selection process and identify key selection tools
Module Four: Compensation and Benefits
  • Explain the basic elements of a total compensation system
  • Understand the role of base pay, incentives and differentials in employee compensation
  • Explain the four key steps of the compensation system design process
  • Provide an overview of benefits commonly offered by employers
Module Five: Employee Development
  • Understand the importance of learning styles and adult learning principles in development training
  • Explain the purposes of orientation, onboarding, training and development
  • Identify on-the-job and off-the-job training strategies
  • Identify key professional development tools
  • Explain the four levels of evaluation
Module Six: Performance Management
  • Describe the performance evaluation process and systems
  • Identify common evaluation errors
  • Conduct effective disciplinary meetings
  • Identify legal issues to consider during employee terminations

Fee: $649

Fee includes SHRM Essentials of HR Management Learning System. Two sections of the same course are available as options. This is not a two-part course.

Kathleen M. Fenninger, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, GPHR, has more than 25 years of experience in human resources both as a generalist and an employment specialist, primarily in the energy and financial services industries in Houston and New York City. She has served as president of the Houston Human Resource Management Association and was awarded the Distinguished Professional in Human Resources award in 1998. Ms. Fenninger holds an MBA in organizational behavior and marketing, an M.S. in education and a B.A. in English from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. She has been an instructor for the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies since 1996.
