Summer AP Academies

The Academies, a 26-hour course, provides experienced AP teachers the opportunity to delve deeply into specific course content with higher education faculty and to connect to their discipline’s current work.

The Rice University Academies provide experienced AP® teachers the opportunity to delve deeply into specific course content with higher education faculty and to connect to their discipline’s current work. This unique professional development model provides teachers the depth of content needed to improve their instruction and increase student achievement. Facilitated by master teachers, each course is typically composed of a variety of presentations by distinguished faculty from Rice and other institutions of higher education.

Courses will be held Tuesday-Friday, 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on the Rice University campus. Courses and master teachers are subject to change. Only enrolled adults are allowed to participate in the program. We cannot accommodate supervised or unsupervised children.

Rice University requests all participants purchase flight insurance for financial protection in the event of an unexpected emergency or course cancellation.

Professional Development Credits: Participants will receive up to 26 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits or 2.6 Continuing Education Units (CEU). SBEC Continuing Professional Education Provider Number 500571

Note: The Rice University Academies for AP Teachers is not approved by TAGT for GT hours, but some districts will allow a limited number of hours to be applied for update hours. Please contact your district for specifics.

Acknowledgment of Enrollment: Once you register for a course through our online registration system, you will be enrolled in the course. An enrollment acknowledgment will immediately be sent to the email address on your account showing payment confirmation or including instructions for submitting payment via check. In some cases, a course may be full, and you will have the option of getting on a waiting list. A waiting list is automatically created for a course once it has filled to capacity. If a spot should become available in that filled course, and you are next on the waiting list, you will receive an email to the email address on file with instructions for completing registration for that specific course. Integration into AP Teaching: Each Academy master teacher, working with university faculty members, will facilitate classroom conversations to help teachers incorporate the advanced content into their AP® classroom.

Discussions, Readings, Collegiality: Participants who choose an Academy should be prepared to participate in engaging, relevant and immersive discussions with the lead consultant, university faculty members, and fellow participants. Participants may also be given required readings before and during the course.

Early registration: $525 (until April 29)
Regular registration: $575 (April 30-June 10)

Tuition includes course materials, parking and lunch. Lunch will be served on campus daily.

The Houston Marriott Medical Center is located a few blocks from the campus. Rates do not include parking or taxes. Room amenities include a small refrigerator, hair dryer, clock radio, iron and ironing board.

Check-in is on the Monday before the start of the program and check-out is on Friday. The Marriott will host a reception on Thursday evening for guests in this program. Please check with the hotel desk upon check-in.

Rice University offers dormitories for your stay within our beautiful campus. Each room is equipped with a bed, dresser, closet, desk and chair. Please do not register for campus housing until you are registered in your desired course. Campus housing is not available for courses held June 25-28.

Dining Services

Dining services provides breakfast and dinner for campus housing guests.

Campus Parking

Campus parking is included with your tuition and provided in an assigned lot, to be determined. The Rice shuttle bus travels the “inner loop route” from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays. After that time participants will need to walk across campus to return to their housing.

Information Technology

Free wireless internet access is available throughout campus. No password is necessary.

Fondren Library

Public research terminals are located directly around the reference desk on the first floor of the library. Computers for online catalog searching are also available on each floor. Computer access for e-mail and word processing is not available to the public.
